Mahindra’s Xylo, a Short Review
The name of the car is “Celebration” although it hardly merits a party. The design and value of this SUV is over-stated. Given that the makers of the Xylo Celebration only ordered 1,000 for the first production, they may suspect the same. Mahindra seems to target drivers who want the size of the Scorpio without the muscle.
There are a few defining features that accompany this “car.” It comes equipped with a gear knob and ski racks for folks who plan weekend getaways at hill stations. In fact, it is ideal for winter climates with its wear defogger and wiper. Sadly, there is no climate control which inevitably means that the driver has to continually adjust hot and cold to prevent the windows from fogging up.
Passengers can listen to their favorite tunes on the SUV’s MP3 player and easily roll down the windows with a quick push of a button. The driver electronically controls the side-mirrors, which is fantastic. Those bumps in the road move mirrors around so the electronic button makes it safer to readjust them. All of the seats require manual adjustment. The rear seats fold down but buyers of this not-so-exciting ride must burn some elbow grease and put those down manually too.
The most interesting and yet, completely useless feature of the Xylo is its parking sensor. That’s right folks; the Xylo parks the car for you and sends of a signal when any object is too close to your rear. It is entirely unclear how this serves as an asset to an Indian driver who must use any means necessary to squeeze into tight spots. Plus, there are object everywhere, all the time. The alarm would never stop!
The Xylo should lay low, preferably out of sight until the engineers figure out a way to make it more exciting. Given that the only innovative feature of the Xylo Celebration is the parking sensor, this SUV is a party pooper. Buyers should throw their money into the pot for something much fun than this boring square. Save you fanfare for something other than Xylo Celebration.
